Frankincense

Frankincense (levona in Hebrew) is made from the Boswellia Sacra tree. It grows in East Africa and India.
Frankincense oil is made from the sap which is extracted by slitting the trunk of the tree, allowing a milk-like substance to flow down the bark. The liquid hardens and becomes crystalized into resin.
The resin is then steam-distilled. It has a pleasant fragrancel. The oily resin repels moisture and protects the tree from predators.

Frankincense oil, whose properties were discovered over four thousand years ago, is considered a sacred and expensive ingredient, and is mentioned in Jewish sources as the main ingredient among the 4 incense perfumes in the Temple. Other cultures also consider the Frankincense sacred.
