Nutmeg, KIlufa in Hebrew, is the nutmeg tree, which grows in tropical climates and the seed’s aromatic peel yields a valuable spice with medicinal properties. A superb essential oil is made by distilling the peel.
The plant was identified as the source for the Biblical incense by Rabbi Saadia Gaon, who used its ancient name of Albasbasa, which appears in an ancient plant dictionary.
The Rambam also included the Nutmeg at the head of the list of perfumes, because of its efficient medical properties.
Nutmeg has antioxidants, which may protect cells form harm. It also contains ingredients which help neutralize free radical molecules. High concentrations of free radicals may take a role in many skin diseases and cause rapid aging.
